In the Greek beliefs, to die was to enter into the possession of superhuman power, to become capable of conferring benefit or of inflicting misfortune by supernatural means. By the person being dead, they become a divine power, it was their belief that ghosts are men who have departed from this life who should be considered as divine beings. The Greeks honored them in worship and prayer and believed that despite their supernatural power, the dead are still dependent upon the living for happiness. They believed they needed earthly nourishment and homage, such as food and drink, and the reverence of their descendants. Each ghost had to rely for such comfort upon its living kindred, and only through devotion of that kindred could it ever find repose.
