In 274 AD, the Roman emperor Valerian declared December 25th the birthday of Sol Invicta, the Unconquerable Sun. So to continue the Roman celebration of Saturnalia, the Roman Catholic Church renamed this pagan festival to Christmas. What is Saturnalia? It is the celebration of the Winter Solstice which began on December 17 with the feast of Saturn which is also called the Saturnalia.
